LADA 4x4 has been demanded in Russian and foreign markets during almost 40 years since project had started. 32 years  a large generation of all- wheel-drive models and modifications has been produced. Due to unique flotation ability, safety, simple maintenance and a fair price..

LADA 4x4 has been demanded in Russian and foreign markets during almost 40 years since project had started. 32 years  a large generation of all- wheel-drive models and modifications has been produced. Due to unique flotation ability, safety, simple maintenance and a fair price it has a stable position in the market of compact off-roaders in Russia and Europe even in crisis period.
Considering the fact that minimum during five yeas LADA 4x4 will not meet competitors in its class, in 2007 plant leadership made a decision of current reengineering in order to implement new safety requirements, improve reliability and application properties. Though reengineered exterior of  LADA 4x4 differs only with its new side lamps and exterior mirror, many elements and gages have been significantly upgraded.

 

 

Engine and systems

Engine specifications were not changed.
According to  Euro III and Euro IV exhaust manifold was modernized and precious metals were used for neutralization tank. According to service manual , 92 ON gasoline can be used with some power deviations.

 

In order to prevent coolant leaks new laying with elastic silicon rollers was designed. It reserves its sealing capability during vehicle’s lifetime and does not require to be retightened. 

 

New imported oil-seal , preventing “water pump leak”, was used in order to extend water pump bearing endurance.

 

Fuel-feed system was redesigned significantly. Fuel filter was removed from engine room to underbody part, quick disconnect couplings are implemented.

 

Transmissions

200 mm clutch was replaced by new reinforced 215 mm clutch manufacture red by Valeo company similar to Chevrolet-Niva. Endurance was proved to be increased up to  20 thousands km.

Transfer box is produced with silicon sealing instead of paper gasket. Ventilation system for transfer box with open valves rules out the possibility of exceeding pressure in transfer box.


Propshafts are manufactured with new equipments at “Kardan” plant in Syzran; conform with higher imbalance and geometric relationship requirements. It decreases rattles and noises and improves propshafts efficiency and endurance.

 

Higher reliability in tough road conditions. Improved  damper prevents chatter when taking off and gear shifting, pedal effort was reduced to40% together with new clutch linkage, necessity of clutch linkage control and “clutch bearing noise” were excluded.

Modifications content

  • Unitized  with ВАЗ-2123 front suspension knuckles;
  • New lower arms with larger silent blocks;
  • Smaller steering offset and disturbing force leve arm;
  • Changed wheel alignment angle for better vehicle stability;
  • Lower lever axle of larger diameter (O18 instead of O16);
  • Ball joints with forged body, polymeric bearing and  enlarged  rocking angle;
  • Optimized length of compression and rebound buffers;
  • Optimized length and damping features of larger shock absorber;
  • Enforced upper shock absorber mounting bracket.

General improvement of application features

  • Stability and steerability of Kalina and Priora level.
  • Improved comfort as a result of easy suspension running before buffers start and increase in its total strokes;
  • Increased endurance of front suspension parts;
  • Reduced steering wheel effort and  bumping display;
  •  To unify and reduce list of parts in the production process, modified front suspension brackets of ВАЗ-21214 will be used in Chevrolet-Niva assembly.

Larger size of silent blocks manufactured by curing method in ANVIS-Rus company :

  • Increases of silent blocks life;
  • Reduces chatter display;
  • Prevents  «squeak and rattle»;
  • Excludes retightening necessity during operation.

 

Larger size of shock absorbers:

  • Increases suspension dynamic capacity;
  • Increases suspension strokes;
  • Significantly reduces vehicle’s «rocking»;
  • Increases their life and endurance.

Modifications content

  • Kinematic features are changed due to designed angle between longitudinal axle and lower  suspension rods;
  • Vertically installed shock absorbers ;
  • Larger shock absorbers with optimized features.

Designed angle between longitudinal axle and lower  suspension rods reduces cross and angular movements of rare axle:

  • Reduces “thrusting” effect of rear axle due to «Панара» suspension rod.
  • Reduces vehicle wander when crossing over single asperities.

Larger size of shock absorbers:

  • Improves effectiveness for 30-40 %;
  • Reduces temperature behavior;
  • Improves stability and steerability;
  • Increases shock absorbers endurance

General improvement of application features

  • Improved stability and steerability;
  • Reduced  «rocking» effect;
  • Improved road-holding ability and trajectories stability;
  • Same damping characteristics on worndown roads;
  • Improved angles of approach and departure.

 

Brake system

Installed vacuum booster of 9 instead of 8 inches and new aluminum brake master cylinder  D 22,22 mm instead of 20,64 mm.
General improvement of application features  :

  • 30 % reduced brake pedal effort for  and 15 % reduced stroke for, removed drive gaps and improved informativity;
  • Improved brake effectiveness and braking stability, due to ТИИР 240 brake blocks installed;
  • Improved system reliability and lifetime, increased brake blocks life.

Lighting

New turn indicator and fender lights instead of sidelight for ВАЗ-2103.

  • Improved lightning characteristics;
  • Improved exterior appearance;
  • Fitting to hood and front panel became better due to elastic strip.   
  • Improved sealing and environmental resistance (moisture, heat resistance)

Mirrors in plastic frame, improved visibility and prevented headlight glare;

  • Can not be folded by wind blows;
  • 50 % lager reflective surface area ;
  • Modern appearance.

Instrument cluster

Installed electronic instrument cluster ВАЗ-2115 with new trim.

  • Improved appearance and informativity;
  • Additional functions: alarm, environmental temperature, voltmeter;
  • Improved reliability, speedometer drive cable removed.
 

Life goes on

Modifications applied are not the last changes planned in the life cycle of  LADA 4x4 vehicles. There are series of innovations coming in 2009/2010. 
It is engine modification designed to meet Euro V and extend export to central Europe until 2014.
It is double-raw bearing for output shafts of transfer box, significantly reducing their play and hopping, and new oil-seals for transfer box and front and rear axle reducers with edge protection.
It is dynamic vibration dampers significantly reducing vibration from body power-unit. 
And, finally, it is new interior, manufactured by jet casting from polypropylene, instead of modeling from  ABS,  rear seats with separately folding seatbacks and cushions, more comfortable and reliable seat retainers.
Rear seat design will allow installing two children seats under «Isofix» standard.
Now we are working out a design for better application including 205/75 R15tire size, roof railing, distantly controlled exterior mirrors, protection plates for deflectors of ventilation system on hood and rear struts,  protection plate on the front roof trim with built-in lights, seats heating., 
Favored soil of Russian fields contributes to longevity of LADA 4x4  family.
